A little island with a surface size of only five square kilometers, located only 30 minutes by boat from Mykonos. Because Apollo, the god of light, and Artemis, the goddess of night light, were born there in Greek mythology, it is frequently referred to as the sacred island and the island of light. The Kares and the Phoenicians were the first people to live on the island of Delos, according to Thucydides’ account. The sanctuary was surrounded by a few homes and farms by the end of the fifth century B.C., but the city did not begin to take shape until a few decades after 166 B.C. This little island, which is hardly visible on a map of the Mediterranean, is thought to have been inhabited by about 30.000 people by the year 90 B.C. All of these diverse people coexisted happily after adopting the Greek way of life, doing things like speaking and writing Greek, residing in Greek homes, and erecting temples to their respective gods without any major issues. While their kids went to the same high school and played and worked out in the same gyms, they all worked and had fun alongside the locals. The people of the Mediterranean region appear to be coexisting peacefully for the first time in human history, in this remote region of the planet. When archaeologists started exploring Delos’ ruins in 1872, it attracted new attention on a global scale. Delos was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990. The archaeological site is extremely wide and rich and gives the idea of a major cosmopolitan Mediterranean port, reads a description of Delos UNESCO nomination. Small groups of tourists, mostly from Europe, began to travel to the island to see the intriguing historic ruins that were slowly being uncovered. Over the years, the trickle of visitors grew into a regular flow of travelers from all over the world, and as a result, Delos is now a popular tourist destination that attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually and is regarded as a “”must see”” attraction for tourists who are traveling to Mykonos.
