A little island with a surface size of only five square kilometers, located only 30 minutes by boat from Mykonos. Because Apollo, the god of light, and Artemis, the goddess of night light, were born there in Greek mythology, it is frequently referred to as the sacred island and the island of light. The Kares and the Phoenicians were the first people to live on the island of Delos, according to Thucydides’ account. The sanctuary was surrounded by a few homes and farms by the end of the fifth century B.C., but the city did not begin to take shape until a few decades after 166 B.C. This little island, which is hardly visible on a map of the Mediterranean, is thought to have been inhabited by about 30.000 people by the year 90 B.C. When archaeologists started exploring Delos’ ruins in 1872, it attracted new attention on a global scale. Delos was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990.
